In my experiences of traveling to countries in Africa and the world, being around many amazing people, and having the opportunity to interact with the good, the bad, and the ugly that life brought  my way, savoring foods and drinks of different cultures, made by different people, I am encouraged to believe that people make countries, and NOT the-other-way-round.

In the heart of Namibia, a land where red dunes kiss blue skies, Lilian Chudey Pride, Publisher, iwriteafrica.com, encountered a woman whose spirit embodies the very essence of her country.  Here is her lively and down to earth interaction with this brave soul, Ms. Jordaania Kondjeni Andima in Windhoek, Namibia.

(QUES) What makes you feel and think like a Namibian?

(ANS) What makes me feel and think like a Namibian is the deep connection I have to our rich cultural heritage, diverse traditions, and resilient spirit as a people. The landscapes of Namibia—the vast deserts, rugged mountains, and open skies—are not just physical spaces but symbols of our strength and adaptability. Our shared history, from the fight for independence to the progress we continue to make as a nation, shapes my perspective and pride. The values of Ubuntu, community, and unity instilled in me from an early age guide my interactions and decisions, reflecting the collective identity we uphold as Namibians. Moreover, I feel Namibian in the way I celebrate our local languages, embrace our cuisines, and participate in cultural festivals that connect us to our roots. It is this fusion of past and present, tradition and modernity, that defines my sense of self and my outlook as a proud Namibian.

(QUES) What do you like most being a Namibian?

(ANS) What I like most being a Namibian is its breathtaking diversity, both in its landscapes and its people. The natural beauty of Namibia is unparalleled, from the iconic dunes of Sossusvlei and the vast expanse of the Namib Desert to the wildlife-rich Etosha National Park and the lush Caprivi Strip. Each region tells a unique story and offers a different perspective on the country’s rich environmental tapestry. Beyond the landscapes, I deeply admire the cultural diversity of Namibia. With our 13 recognized ethnic groups, each contributing unique traditions, languages, and art forms, there is a vibrant blend of heritage that creates a sense of unity in diversity.

Lastly, the resilience and warmth of the Namibian people are what I cherish most. Despite our history and challenges, Namibians have shown an unwavering spirit of hope, innovation, and community. It is this combination of natural wonder, cultural richness, and human strength that makes Namibia a place I am deeply proud of.

(QUES) How do you start your day?

(ANS) Well, I begin my day by watering my garden, which gives me a moment of peace and connection with nature. After that, I have a refreshing ginger shot to kickstart my energy and get ready for the day ahead. Once I’m set, I head to work, and on some mornings, I pack my breakfast to enjoy at the office. When I arrive, I settle in and savour my breakfast while reviewing my work emails and checking my to-do list, which I always prepare the day before to stay organized. This routine helps me prioritize tasks and approach the day with clarity.

After this, I dive into my work, balancing meetings, projects, and deadlines, all while ensuring that I stay productive and focused. My morning rituals—simple yet purposeful—set the tone for a productive and fulfilling day.

(QUES) What inspires your patriotism?

(ANS) What inspires my patriotism is seeing the tangible impact of collaborative efforts aimed at improving the lives of Namibians, especially in areas like education, health, and youth empowerment. For instance, my work as the Namibian Country Representative for Footsteps for Africa exemplifies this. My dedication to facilitating partnerships that provide vital resources, such as books, reusable sanitary products, and training for youth-focused initiatives like the #BeFree Youth Campus, demonstrates the power of collective action in addressing critical needs and fostering development in Namibia. Additionally, my focus on nurturing partnerships to enhance educational infrastructure and empower young people reflects the spirit of patriotism rooted in creating opportunities for others. Such efforts remind me of the potential within Namibia when communities unite to overcome challenges and build a brighter future. It is this shared vision and commitment to progress that fuels my pride and love for my country.

(QUES) What issues or significant events encourage your devotion to Namibia?

(ANS) My devotion to Namibia is encouraged by the pressing issues of poverty, the lack of access to education, and the need to promote a culture of reading among learners. These challenges highlight the urgent need for collective efforts to uplift communities and create opportunities for every Namibian to thrive. Namibia faces significant educational barriers, with some schools struggling due to limited resources and infrastructure. My work with Footsteps for Africa stands out as an inspiring response to these challenges. Our initiatives focus on providing books, educational materials, and mentorship to schools in underserved communities. For instance, through collaborations with the #BeFree Youth Campus, we have helped create spaces where young people can access resources and guidance, fostering a supportive environment for growth.

Promoting literacy and encouraging a culture of reading are essential steps in addressing educational inequities. Our efforts in distributing reusable learning materials and partnering with stakeholders to enhance school resources not only combat illiteracy but also inspire hope and ambition among learners. Poverty remains a critical issue, often denying many Namibian children the opportunity to access quality education. The work of organizations like Footsteps for Africa, which directly tackles these systemic issues, serves as a reminder of what can be achieved through unity and dedication. Such initiatives reflect the resilience of Namibians in overcoming adversity and inspire my continued commitment to the nation’s development. These events and efforts reinforce the belief that change is possible when individuals and communities work together. They serve as a call to action to contribute towards a Namibia where every child can access education, dream big, and achieve their full potential.

(ANS) I was born in Angola, a country rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty. Its vibrant traditions and history have deeply influenced my roots. Growing up there allowed me to experience its dynamic cultural environment and develop a strong appreciation for the diversity of African communities.

In Zimbabwe, which I visited in 2024, I was inspired by its breathtaking landscapes, including the majestic Victoria Falls, and the resilience of its people despite economic challenges. This visit reinforced my commitment to learning from and contributing to the development of the African continent.

South Africa has been a destination for both work and leisure, providing opportunities to engage with its rich cultural tapestry and history, especially its journey through and beyond apartheid. From Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain to Johannesburg’s bustling energy, South Africa showcases the blend of modernity and tradition that defines much of Africa.

These experiences across Angola, Congo-Brazzaville, Zimbabwe, and South Africa have deepened my understanding of Africa’s diversity and resilience. They continue to inspire my commitment to contributing meaningfully to the continent’s development.

(QUES) How much of Mother Africa’s culture, food, art, literary works do you know?

(Either on one-on-one basis or virtually)

(ANS) I have had the privilege of immersing myself in a rich tapestry of Mother Africa’s culture, food, art, and literary works both directly and virtually. Through my experiences and travels across Africa, including my upbringing in Angola and Congo-Brazzaville, I’ve gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for the continent’s diversity and creativity.

Namibian culture, in particular, holds a special place in my heart. The country’s traditional foods are a vivid reflection of its cultural heritage. Dishes like kapana, a popular street food featuring grilled beef, and bobotie, a spiced meat dish with an egg topping, offer a glimpse into the country’s culinary richness. I also enjoy potjiekos, a stew often cooked over a fire, and mahangu, a type of millet commonly used to prepare porridge. These foods, often shared in communal settings, play an essential role in bringing people together, reflecting Namibia’s spirit of unity and community.

As for African art and literature, I have explored a wide range of works that highlight the creativity and depth of the continent. From traditional African art forms that celebrate storytelling, spirituality, and connection to nature, to modern art that speaks to the continent’s evolving identity, I’ve found that African art is a dynamic and powerful expression of both history and progress.

Literary works, too, have played an integral role in shaping my understanding of Africa. Authors like Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Mariama Bâ have provided powerful narratives that explore Africa’s struggles, triumphs, and complex identities. Locally, Namibian authors like Neshani Andreas and Sorraya L. Amadhila contribute to the growing body of African literature that highlights unique voices and experiences.

In addition to firsthand encounters, virtual platforms and online communities have allowed me to continue exploring African culture and art. The wealth of knowledge available through digital platforms, from art exhibitions to online literary discussions, has deepened my connection to Africa’s cultural landscape, making me feel closer to the continent’s heritage and creative expressions. This journey of discovery has reinforced my pride in being African, as it is not only about personal experiences but also about connecting with the larger cultural narrative of Mother Africa.

I feel privileged to be part of a continent that is not only the cradle of humanity but also a place of boundless potential and innovation. Despite challenges such as poverty, inequality, and historical injustices, Africans have continually demonstrated resilience, ingenuity, and a commitment to shaping a brighter future.

Being African also means carrying the responsibility to contribute to the continent’s growth and to challenge stereotypes by showcasing the wealth of talent, culture, and innovation that Africa has to offer. From Angola, where I was born, to Congo-Brazzaville, where I grew up, and beyond, my experiences have connected me to the strength and beauty of our people and their stories.
